Rugby League

Rugby League has been part of the Murrumbeena Primary School Sport program for over 15 years.  We have been finalists in the 2006 and 2007 Victorian Rugby League championships !

There have been many wonderful stories come out of Rugby League.  I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen our kids use their ‘fancy foot-work’ to avoid  opposition players.  On many occasions considerably smaller MPS players have successfully tackled much bigger opponents.  During the 2007 State finals – L.R.’s family took a video of two outstanding tackles he did within 60 seconds – he brought the entire crowd to life !

2008 Update:  2x Murrumbeena BDPSSA Rugby League Premiers !
MPS ‘A’ is off to the Victorian Rugby League Championships for the third year in a row Woo- Hoo !
Many thanks to the parents who supported us throughout the day.
‘A’ Team
* Game 1 – Great individual efforts from W.B. and D.X. got the ‘A’ team off to a good start - MPS 16 Vs OSPS 8
* Game 2 – Although St Andrew’s were much bigger than than us, good team work in defence and two quick tries kept MPS finals hopes alive – MPS 12 Vs St Andrew’s 8.
* Game 3 – Our final game was a test of concentration and desperation. Everyone played their role, however  K.A.  R.E.   J.C.  and  N.C. made a significant difference and moved the ball around until the try-line could be found by the Murrumbeena players – MPS 24 Vs St Peters 12
* FINAL – The ‘A’ final was a rematch from earlier in the day Vs OSPS.  We were very wary, as we knew they had improved heaps since playing us in round one. Fortunately our set plays worked well, our bigger players make gaps for the support runners to weave some magic. Our own version of ‘Billy Slater’ (M.M.) broke through to score – MPS 28 Premiers Vs OSPS 4        Well done ‘A’ team
‘B’ Team
* Game 1 – Our day was off to a great start, when T.D. scored two spectacular tries.  Others followed his example – MPS 16 Vs OSPS 4
* Game 2 - We continued our intensity in attack. The parents on the side-line were cheering and jumping around as O.M. (2)  S.P. (1)  A.L. (1) and S.H. (4) score their tries. Disciplined defence stopped St Andrew’s from getting over the try line - MPS 32 Vs St Andrew’s 0
* Game – 3 The final game was a play-off between two undefeated teams. Murrumbeena was behind at half-time. Everyone was keen to make the grand final and we came our ‘firing’ in the second half. Strong defence and four tries in the second half from O.M. (3) and S. P. (1) gave Murrumbeena the win to assure a berth in the final – MPS 16 Vs St Peter’s 12
* FINAL – Team work, good skills and few errors in the first half gave the entire team confidence and a great start.  Tries from O.M. (3) and T.D.(2) finished the day on a high note – MPS 20 Premiers Vs St Peter’s 12          Well done ‘B’ team

Congratulations to all players.  You can be very proud of your skills, team work and sportsmanship.  It is very clear that you have developed a deep understanding of Rugby League.  You were able to make good decisions and effectively use your skills to best effect throughout the games, including the pressure of finals.

I had a great time at the Rugby League Gala Day starting off with the clinic and ending with us winning the grand final against Oakleigh South P.S. 28 to 4.

Wednesday 12 November, 14 boys participated in the Victorian Primary School Rugby League Championships. It was a very hot day, but we came prepared with lots to drink and had been hydrating ourselves over the previous 24 hours. There were 38 teams in the championships this year and the quality of teams was significantly stronger than last year. We had a tough start and lost our first game Vs Lilydale. We played better with each game, despite the building heat. Our second game was a narrow loss to the current VPSSA Champions – Mandama. The improvement continued and we got our first win Vs Greythorne and finished with a draw Vs Highton C.C. We had heaps of fun in the sun and encourage our Year 5 and 6 students to have a go next year.
